چکیده

Counter-current imbibition in one dimension is analyzed, in which a wetting phase (water) displaces a non-wetting phase against gravity. An approximate analytical approach is used to derive an expression for the saturation profile in the case where the mobility of the displaced phase at the inlet is finite. This approach is applicable to waterflooding in hydrocarbon reservoirs, flow in geothermal systems, or the displacement of non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) or air by water. Solutions are developed for both gravity-dominated and capillary-dominated cases. In the capillary-dominated limit the predicted recoveries compare very well with experimental data from the literature, over all time scales. The use of this expression for field-scale dual-porosity modeling of flow in fractured systems is briefly discussed. D 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Oil Recovery by Spontaneous Imbibition from Weakly Water-Wet Rocks

Spontaneous imbibition is of special importance to oil recovery from fractured reservoirs. Laboratory measurements of volume of liquid imbibed versus time are often used in the prediction of oil recovery. Imbibition measurements also provide a useful approach to the complex problem of characterizing the wetting properties of porous media. Correlation of a large body of data for imbibition of br...

Analytic Analysis for Oil Recovery During Counter-Current Imbibition in Strongly Water-Wet Systems

We study counter-current imbibition, where a strongly wetting phase (water) displaces non-wetting phase spontaneously under the influence of capillary forces such that the non-wetting phase moves in the opposite direction to the water. We use an approximate analytical approach to derive an expression for saturation profile when the viscosity of the non-wetting phase is non-negligible. This make...

An Analytical Solution for One-dimensional Horizontal Imbibition in a Cocurrent Flow

Cocurrent spontaneous imbibition (COCSI) of an aqueous phase into matrix blocks arising from capillary forces is an important mechanism for petroleum recovery from fractured petroleum reservoirs. In this work, the modeling of countercurrent imbibition is used to develop the appropriate scaling equations. Considering the imbibition process and the water and oil movement respectively as the wet p...

Effects of Gravity and Inlet/Outlet Location on a Two-Phase Cocurrent Imbibition in Porous Media

We introduce 2D numerical investigations of the problem of gravity and inlet/outlet location effects of water-oil two-phase cocurrent imbibition in a porous medium. Three different cases of side-, top-, and bottom-inlet location are considered. Two-dimensional computations are carried out using the finite element method. Intensive comparisons are done between considering and neglecting gravity ...

An Experimental Method of Measuring Steam- Water and Air-Water Capillary Pressures

An experimental method was developed to measure both steam-water and air-water capillary pressures using an X-ray CT technique. We conducted spontaneous water imbibition and gravity drainage in ceramic core samples for steam-water and air-water systems respectively. The results were compared, and it was found that the steam-water capillary pressures were significantly less than the airwater cap...
